GEOSPATIAL INFORMATION SYSTEM FOR TRADITIONAL INDUSTRIES
IN THIRUVANANTHAPURAM DISTRICT
Department of Industries and commerce is a major organization
actively involved for the industrial growth of the State. KSIDC, SSI, KINFRA, SIDCO
and a chain of public and private limited companies are the major sister concerns
of this department. Industrial development of the state warrants the effective coordination
of these organizations and other resource infrastructure. Emerging sectors, like
Information Technology and Telecom offer large growth opportunities. But Kerala’s
growth cannot depend solely on these sunrise industries. There is also an urgent
need to address traditional industries, which still form strong pillars of the Kerala
economy. They account for a significant proportion of Kerala’s employment and industrial
output. Sustained growth of the nation’s economy is not possible without the revival
of traditional industries. Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala is abundant
in rich natural resources. The major traditional industries of Thiruvananthapuram
includes handloom, coir, bamboo, palmera etc. Traditional industries are now encountered
with several problems. In this direction, a geospatial Information system on traditional
industries is essential for the sustainable development of such industries.
